There are all sorts of airy-fairy things we all want our kids to have and enjoy but in this thinking we have to add practicality and reality to what we will be teaching our children.

I think one of the nicest things that I have ever heard wished for a child was ‘acceptance’.

At the time I didn’t properly understand the wish and thought it was a bit weird. But as my life progressed, and my children grew up into the sort of adults we hoped for, their own ‘karma’ came into play. Their own needs and characteristics developed over and above the fundamentals we had wanted for them.

These you can’t do anything about but can only hope you have instilled enough of your own life philosophies into their thinking. The most basic yet comprehensive of these is love. Love of God, love of self, love of life and love for everything and everyone around them.

Because if your child is gay, believe me, all these attributes will be sorely tested in them.

This is why the wish of ‘acceptance’ became such a precious wish.
