Progesterone is a hormone that is produced in large quantities in most women during pregnancy that helps maintain the pregnancy without complication. However, in some women, the progesterone level is not sufficient to defend the body against the estrogen level. In several such cases, there is a high chance of either miscarriage or premature delivery of the baby.

Most doctors these days give women progesterone to avoid premature delivery. This also helps the mother in avoiding toxemia during delivery.

Progesterone cream does not seem to have any negative effect on the fetus. Doctors are advising the mother to start using the progesterone cream soon after conception. The cream can be applied till about two weeks before delivery. This helps the baby stay in for a full term as well help the mother avoid excessive stretch marks.

Synthetic progesterone, on the other hand, has shown a number of side effects on the mother and the baby. Usage of synthetic progesterone cream actually lessens the progesterone level in the body. Contraceptives such as birth control pills are one example of synthetic progesterone.

The mother can continue using the cream up to one month after delivery. However, it is suggested to consult a physician before starting to use the cream again.

Mothers should take a lot of care while using this cream. Though the cream can help to minimize post partum depression, it can become addictive if used for a long time. Stopping after a long time might result in depression and mood swings. An overdose sometimes causes hyper activeness.
